Embrace the chaos with LH5: where the running (or walking) never stops and the shenanigans never end!

EVERY DAY IS HUMP DAY!

About Us (what is Hash House Harriers and Harriettes and LH5?)

EVERY DAY IS HUMP DAY with LH5! however, we have chosen to restrict it to Wednesdays to keep the mob happy!

We’re an active group of people from all walks of life who enjoy some fun, and fitness, followed by food, frothies, and frivolities!

As we say, We are a drinking club with a running problem!

Hashing is designed to:

(a) to promote physical fitness amongst its members
(b) to get rid of weekend hangovers (or create them!)
(c) to acquire a good thirst and to satisfy it with beer (or preferred drink)
(d) to persuade the older members that they are not as old as they feel & to have a good laugh by stirring each other up.

In general, Hash House Harriers (H3 or Mother Hash) qualify as the world’s largest running club with more than 2000 H3 clubs in some 1300 cities and 184 countries. Total membership is in excess of 100,000.  There are several hash house harrier clubs in Tasmania, and this club is one of them.

Hump Day Hash House Harriers & Harriettes (LH5) is a club with a non-competitive social run/walk starting at 6:30 p.m. every Wednesday, mostly in the suburbs and bushland of Launceston. Check out the Facebook page for details of the next run.

LH5 caters to those who enjoy a competitive fun run, a brisk walk, or just a stroll and chat with their mates.

Regardless of the weather, there will usually be three trails set, a runners trail of approx. 6k, a long walkers trail of approx. 4k, and a short walkers trail of approx 2.5k.  Usually, the shorter trails are parts of the longer runners’ trail.

Don’t forget your torch and beanie in winter! plus your choice of drink and your camp chair for a burrow or park run.

Good value meals are provided after each run with meals at either a burrow, park, or local pubs.

LH5 is a not-for-profit group, all funds raised will go back into activities for members.

Membership for LH5 does not involve any regular commitment, you come along when you can and just pay the run fee on the night.

You can join in any Hash run anywhere in Tasmania, mainland Australia, or the World. just visit the Aussie HHH website https://www.hhh.asn.au/ to find a run.

If you are interested in the origins of Hashing, then please visit https://www.gotothehash.net/history/hhhhistory.html for information on the history of HHH.

The only thing required to have a Hash Run is a hare to set a trail with paper, flour, sawdust, chalk, etc., or a combination of these items.  Length varies, but a reasonable trail would be between 7-12 kms, preferably over a cross-country terrain, but many clubs run through city streets and back alleys.  Trail can be set live, meaning the hare gets a 10-15 minute head start, or set dead, with the trial being completed before the pack setting off.  With the trail being set, all that is left is a willing pack to make chase.  The shear brilliance of Hashing is the complete austerity of it.

As our club grows, LH5 members will be able to enjoy many additional activities, including: golf, kayaking, hiking, cycling, and participation in worldwide Inter-Hash events. There will be an active social side apart from the weekly runs with a wide range of social events to share with partners that may include social lunches, dinners, theatre groups, and weekends away.

What to Expect (basic rules and itinerary of a typical activity)

A typical run will look like this:

Arrive at the nominated venue around 10 minutes before the run start time (see Hours/Days), listen to the run rules for the evening and then head off following the trail or chasing the hare.

We will use something to mark the trail (flour or chalk), a hare will set the trail, and everyone else will follow the trail.

Walk or run the trail set by the Hare to find the ‘On Home’, with a little luck you may find a piss stop (alcoholic beverage) on the way. but be warned there are false trails and check points, call out On, On… when you find a true trail marker so everyone can find their way.

Careful what you let slip out on the trail, or the ‘Lip’ will let loose during the circle and you may have to ‘down, down’ our choice of drink after we sing a silly song.

What makes hashing a bit different is the reverence to partaking in some cold beer, ginger beer, and various other refreshments (and some friendly teasing), after running, jogging, or walking a fun trail.

Trail markers can look like this: https://www.voodoohash.com/trail-markers/ ,

Typical songs can be found at these websites: https://www.upstatehashers.com/hash-songs , https://cityhash.org.uk/songs/
